We hope you’ve all had an enjoyable and successful bowls’ season.
Last winter, your Social Committee held several events including a trip to see ‘War Horse’, a visit to Henlow Greyhound Stadium, a Christmas party, a Burns’ Night celebration, a ‘Deal or No Deal’ evening and a couple of Quizzes. There were, of course, also our monthly events – coffee mornings, walks, Book Club and Social Evenings.
Our first social event this Autumn will be a Halloween Party on Thursday, 31st October. We last held this event two years ago and although only just over thirty of you came along, those who did had a good time. We’re hoping more of you will join in this year!
On Tuesday, 12th November we will be organizing another trip to Henlow Greyhound Stadium; we’ve done this for several years now and it’s always a good evening out.
Our Annual Presentation and End of Season Lunch will be held on Sunday, 17th November at Homestead Court Hotel, WGC. This is when our competition winners receive their awards so we hope you’ll join us in celebrating their achievements.
On Friday, 6th December we’ll be holding one of our ever-popular Quiz Evenings; these are always good fun with lots of banter and friendly competitiveness amongst the teams. There are a variety of subjects on which the questions are based so there should be something for you!
Last year, we held a Christmas Party with festive entertainment and we’re planning to do this again on Wednesday, 18th December.
On Friday, 7th February we’ll be holding another Quiz Night so you’ll have another chance to show your brilliance!
We also have four events penciled in, including a Race Night in January, a trip to Anglesey Abbey in February to see their snowdrops, a Music Hall Evening and a Tea Dance sometime in the New Year. We will obviously let you have more details if and when these events go ahead.
This year, we’re planning to hold our monthly events on set days of the month, ie Book Club will be on the first Wednesday of each month; our walk on the third Thursday and Coffee Mornings on the fourth Friday. We’ll keep to this as best we can although obviously there may be some variations due to Christmas, etc.
Our first Book Club will be on Wednesday, 2nd October at 11.00am in the Clubhouse. Both ladies and gents are part of the group so we read a variety of books; this month we’ll be reading ‘Thirteen’ by Steve Cavanagh which is a murder mystery. If you enjoy a good read come and join us.
Our first walk will be on Thursday, 17th October at 10.30am. We meet at a local pub and do a three/four mile circular walk; we then have a well-deserved lunch in the pub! Members who prefer not to walk are welcome to meet us at the pub for a sociable lunch. Details of where to meet on the 17th will within the next week be posted on the Club’s website, placed on the Club’s Facebook page and on the Social noticeboard in the Clubhouse as well as by sending you an email.
Our monthly Coffee Mornings with a guest speaker are always popular. As usual, our first one (to be held on Friday, 25th October) will be in aid of MacMillan Cancer Support’s ‘World’s Biggest Coffee Morning’ and all proceeds will be donated to this fund raising event.
Our Social Evenings, held once a fortnight on a Thursday evening, which is as it implies a social event where we play darts, cards and board games was not very popular last winter. We’ve, therefore, decided to hold one on Thursday, 7th November to see how it goes; if there are only a few of us, we won’t arrange any more.
Our social events during the winter are not only an excellent way of keeping in touch with members, but also raise funds for the Club, so we hope you’ll support us whenever you can. Also, if you’d like to organize a walk, know of an interesting guest speaker for a Coffee Morning or have any ideas for a social event, please do let one of us know – we’re always welcome new ideas!
We advertise what’s going on by posting the information on the Club’s website and on the Club’s Facebook page, by putting posters on the noticeboard in the Clubhouse and letting you know by sending you an email. However, if you’d like any further information, please don’t hesitate to get in touch with me.
We look forward to seeing you
With best wishes
