Monday 20th September 2004

Welwyn and District lost its mixed triples match against Roebuck on Wednesday 15th September by 56 shots to 74, with the only winning triple of Frank Lane, Robert Ducat-Brown and Mary Clements (21 to 15)
The Welwyn men won their St Albans & District League match against Potters Bar 83 shots to 78. Top rink was that of Reg Tanner, Andrew Barclay, Mike Poole and Graham Daniels (27-13)
Diana Barrett, County President of HCWBA, brought a representative team to her home (Welwyn and District) green on 16th September and beat the locals by 131 shots to 87.
Welwyn's winning rink (23 to 10) comprised Mary Wills, Janet Tickner, Rita Hipgrave and Dilys Hanson.
Welwyn and District is one of the few clubs in Hertfordshire that can muster 6 rinks for a match and its ladies are keen to find more opponents for next season.



Sunday 12th September 2004

Welwyn & District Men went to Potten End, and came away with a win by 87 shots to 72.
Top rink went to Maurice Downing. Joe Kelly, John Atkins and Graham Daniels, who were easy winners by 28 shots to 9

The Men also won their match against Royston, by 83 shots to 71. Top rink this time was that of Robert Ducat-Brown, John Atkins (again) and Brian Smith (18 – 9).

40th Anniversary of the opening of the green at Ottway Walk

A special match between the teams of the Ladies' Captain (Jean Barclay) and the Men's Captain (Andrew Barclay) was played on Saturday 11 September 2004 to celebrate the 40th Anniversary of the opening of the green by the Welwyn Parish Council. The club was formed during the winter of 1964/5 and the 40th Anniversary of the Club will be celebrated in 2005. The Ladies Captain’s team won by just three shots. Monday 6th September 2004

Welwyn & District Bowls Club hosted its annual match against friends from the Barnet Blind BC on Friday. After an enjoyable lunch the teams played 12 ends of triples in fine weather. Although the visitors did not win, (Welwyn won by 50 shots to 26.) the Barnet players again showed how well they could play the game despite their visual handicaps.

Welwyn and District's County League Team won the South Area Finals, played at St Albans Townsend. In the morning, the Welwyn squad of Mike Poole, Edgar Vaughan, John Templeton, Chris Sherriff, Malcolm Baldwin, Ron Carr, Brian Lane and Mike Lamb beat Oakhill to reach the afternoon final, where they beat St Albans Townsend by 4 shots. Welwyn now go forward to the County Final to be played at Garston on 19th September. Their opponents will be the North Area winners.

Welwyn & District lost a mixed triples match to Harperbury by 46 shots to 81, with only Joan Dickens, Ray Hankin and Don Ellis winning their rink by 13 shots to 10.

DISTRICT SINGLES
Mary Clements beat Jean Wildman of Harperbury at Townsend on Tuesday 31st August 2004 by 21 shots to 4 to go through to the finals of the District Singles to be played on Sunday 19th September 2004 at Harpenden.

DISTRICT PAIRS
Diana Barrett and Mary Clements beat Sue Mathison and Christine Vickers of Batchwood at Welwyn Garden City on Wednesday 1st September 2004 by 18 shots to 14 to go through to the finals of the District pairs to be played on Sunday 19th September 2004 at Harpenden.



Monday 30th August 2004

Welwyn and District shared equally the available eight points with Harpenden, but won by 74 shots to 70 to take the Bob Vise Trophy for the second time - previously in 2001. Congratulations and thanks to all those who played in the various rounds:

Monday 16th August 2004



Welwyn & District Bowls Club won its home match against Harpenden on Saturday 14th, in a St Albans & District League game. by a margin of 84 shots to 68. Welwyn's top rink of Philip Manning, Ken Hipgrave, Ralph Pedder and Brian Smith won by 26 to 10. League points gained - 57.5 to Welwyn & District, 22.5 to Harpenden.

On Sunday 15th both the ladies and men's teams beat opponents from Rowley Lane. Ladies' score was 38 to 31, with a top rink of Sylvia Lane, Olive Perry, Jean Barclay and Mary Clements winning by 22 to 14.
The men's overall score was 71 to Rowley Lane's 62. Andrew Barclay, John Atkins, Edgar Vaughan and Arthur Knight comprised top rink with a score of 21 to 12.



Monday 9th August 2004



Mary Clements, Welwyn & District’s Herts County Champion of Champions has returned from the national finals at Leamington Spa. After a first round victory against the Northants Champion, Mary was drawn against Amy Monkhouse of Lincolnshire, the 2003 National Champion of Champions.
Mary gave a fine performance and was unfortunate to lose by 17 shots to 21. Amy went on to repeat last year's success
Not a good weekend for Welwyn and District men! In the match against Hitchin, Welwyn lost by one shot, (62-63), each rink being tightly contested. Top rink was that of Peter Ingram, Eddie Slater, Graham Hart and Chris Sherriff (16-13)
The next day, Welwyn lost in all four triples at Barton le Clay on Sunday 8th. Total score 90 to 54.
Welwyn Ladies had more success. They overcame the ladies of Baldock by 31 shots to 26, thanks to an overwhelming 22 to 3 win by Olive Perry, Ivy Sykes and Lucy Ratcliffe.

This is an important week for Welwyn and District men. Tuesday sees a decisive County League match against Potters Bar. Success in that will place Welwyn in a good position for the play-offs.

On Friday Welwyn & District play a local derby at Welwyn Garden City in the semi-final of the Bob Vyse Trophy.



Monday 2nd August 2004



Welwyn & District won a mixed triples match at home to Ware by 97 shots to 77, with the top triple of Averil Balnaves, Alan Smith and Ron Howard, easy victors by 31 shots to 12, After leading in a close start, a score of eight shots out of nine on the eighth end, was the catalyst for a succession of winning ends.
In a mixed rinks match at Much Hadham, two extra players were loaned to the home team and this contributed to the downfall of Welwyn & District who lost by 92 shots to 125.
Only the four of Mary Wills, Jim Coldrey, Bob Wells and Dilys Hanson were on a winning rink (22-13)

On Saturday and Sunday, Welwyn & District were hosts to the Herts Men’s County Finals, although they had no representative on the finals.

CHAMPION OF CHAMPIONS

Congratulations to Mary Clements who won the Ladies’ County Singles title beating Janet Sellek of Rowley by 21 shots to 8. Mary now travels to Leamington on the 2 August for the National Finals.

COUNTY TOP TEN

Welwyn & District Men’s team lost their Quarterfinal in the County Top Team Competition losing to Theobalds by 3 matches to one

BOB VYSE TROPHY

In the their Bob Vyse Trophy, the Welwyn Men beat Hatfield. The match ended at two ties each, but Welwyn won by 81 shots to 63. The triple of Reg Jackson, Edgar Vaughan and Mike Lamb won by 27 shots to 3, while the four of Mike Hanson, Ken Hipgrave, Malcolm Baldwin and Chris Sherriff won by 24 shots to 16.

FRIENDLY MATCHES

Welwyn Ladies beat Wallfields by just one shot (45-44) with top triple of Janet Tickner, Averil Balnaves and Olive Perry winning 18 shots to 11
Away to Hitchin in a five triples match, Welwyn won by 90 shots to 62, the top three of Ray Uffen, Reg Jackson and Bob Wells easy winners by 33 shots t 11 on their rink.
Welwyn lost at de Havilland by 76 shots to 73, despite a 28 to 18 victory by Ray Uffen, John Atkins, David Wesley & John Templeton. The Ladies playing at the same venue, won on both rinks for a 34 to 24 score line.

FRIENDLY MATCHES

Welwyn & District enjoyed a day out at the Sparrows Club, Lowestoft, but came away with only one winning rink and one drawn rink from the six played. Betty Singleton, Gladys Tanner, Ron Howard and Gerald Papworth edged a 21-17 shot win over their hosts, but Welwyn lost by 96 shots to 140.

In a mixed friendly against North Herts, Welwyn & District won by 90 shots to 66 with the top triple of Sylvia Ducat-Brown, Jean Barclay and Ralph Pedder (22-12)

In a Ladies’ match reduced to only two triples, Welwyn & District beat Borehamwood, Olive Perry, Dilys Hanson and Sue Larkins winners by 22 to 13.

On Sunday, a mixed team went to Riverain and came away with a win by 75 shots to 63, with the triple of Eddie Slater, Mary Clements, and Margaret Templeton outstanding with a 30 shots to 7 advantage.

Welwyn Men celebrated Bastille Day with a win at St Albans, played at Clarence Park. Top triple of Peter Ingram, Mike Hanson and Ron Carr enjoyed a splendid 22 to 10 win.

COUNTY INTER-CLUB TEAM COMPETITION

Welwyn & District Men were successful in the 3rd round of the County Inter-Club Team Competition (Top Ten) beating Rosedale by 72 shots to 55, to reach the Quarterfinal stage.

FRIENDLY MATCHES

In a friendly match against Allenburys, played as 5 triples for the men and one rink for the ladies, Welwyn & District emerged as winners by 10 shots (109 – 99) with the top triple of Brian Russell, Peter Ingram and Mike Lamb leading the way with a 26 to 8 result. The Ladies’ rink lost by 20 shots to 17.

The Ladies secured a win at Potters Bar by 45 shots to 41, with the top triple of Joan Dickens, Nancy James and Ivy Sykes top with a 22-13 score line.

At home to Stevenage, a five rink mixed triples ended in a win for Welwyn by 97 shots to 70 (top triple was David Wesley, Mary Perkins, and Ralph Pedder (33-14))

Rain stopped play after 14 ends of another mixed friendly against Radlett, with the visitors leading 52 –47 at the stoppage. The top triple at that time consisted of Joanna Clapham, Betty Singleton and David Wesley, having scored 20 shots and given away only 2.

FRIENDLY MATCHES

The Welwyn Ladies defeated Hatfield by just one shot (61-60) in a triples match, with Averil Balnaves, Nancy James and Margaret Templeton top scorers with a 26 to 12 win.
In a friendly against St Albans Townsend, Welwyn & District Men were successful by 80 shots to 73, with the top rink honour shared between that of Ken Hipgrave, Graham Hart, Reg Tanner and Ron Carr (23-15) and John Lee, Ron Howard, Reg Jackson and Brian Smith (20 – 12)

Away to Barnet in a triples match, the men lost by two shots (73-75). Top scorers for Welwyn were Gordon Richardson, John Lee and Bob Wells, with a 26-16 win.

On Sunday, at Hertford Castle, in a match reduced to two rinks, the men won by 47 shots to 38. One rink’s 2-shot defeat was well covered by a 30-19 win by Peter Ingram, Ron Howard, Reg Tanner and John Templeton.
The Ladies, however, lost on both rinks and by an overall margin of 27 shots to 54.

COUNTY TRIPLES

Reg Jackson, Edgar Vaughan and Brian Smith advanced to the neutral greens stage of the County Triples with a win over Malcolm West, Lew Haskins and Les Roberts (Harperbury) by 29 shots to 12.

COUNTY PAIRS

In the County Pairs, Diana Barrett and Mary Clements won their match against Val Dawe and Dympna Whybrow at Bushey and now play Rowley Lane in the next round.

FRIENDLY MATCHES

Bad weather was responsible for the cancellation of two matches for Welwyn & District, but for those matches played, the results were of mixed fortunes.
Against Rowley Lane , the mixed team won on all rinks, for an overall score of 80 shots to 47, with the triple of Pauline Ellis, Andrew Barclay and Lucy Ratcliffe overwhelming their opponents by 25 shots to 7.
At home to Ware, Welwyn went down 71 to 90, with the only win for Welwyn was that of Syd Dickens, Ray Uffen, Malcolm Baldwin and Frank Joyce (25 to 14)


Monday 21st June 2004

FRIENDLY MATCHES

Welwyn Ladies had a comfortable win against Sawbridgeworth, with success on both rinks, Jane Harding, Sue Wingham and Ivy Sykes top with a 22 shots to 8 advantage.
Welwyn Men played a triples match at Potters Bar, winning overall by 72 – 51, and although successful on all four rinks, Gordon Richardson, Edgar Vaughan and Michael Hanson emerged as top triple by 20 shots to 13.
On the same day a mixed match at Three Horseshoes was also won, this time by 89- 75, with Reynold Wiles, Sheila Burch and Maurice Downing showing the way by 26 shots to 16.

MCMULLEN 3rd Round

Welwyn & District lost to Potters Bar in the McMullen Third Round tie by 58 shots to 60 with the skip and President of Potters Bar securing a victory with his last wood to finished as second wood thus denying Welwyn the three shots they needed.

HERTS COUNTY WOMENS BOWLS ASSOCIATION

Mary Clements reached the quarterfinals of the County Champion-of-Champions by winning against Carol Brown 21 shots to 17 at Kings Langley on Sunday 13th June 2004

In a County Triples match Reg Jackson, Edgar Vaughan and Brian Smith reached the Quarterfinal stage with another win this time against Potters Bar.



Monday 14th June 2004

FRIENDLY MATCHES

In a friendly triples match at Sawbridgeworth, The Men came away with an overall win by 66 shots to 59, with Ken Perry, Reynold Wiles and Bob Wells top rink 26-11.

LADIES' INVITATION GALA

Welwyn Ladies held an Invitation Gala, which was won by Welwyn Garden City ladies, represented by Marjorie Miller, Jean Flay and Rita Wilsmore.

Hitchin finished second and Roebuck third place.

COUNTY

The Men's Top Ten County 2nd Round match against Berkhamsted, finished with a 80-75 win for the men of Welwyn.

In a County Triples match Reg Jackson, Edgar Vaughan and Brian Smith edged a close win over N.Tunstall, P.Coster and G.Price of Shire Park by just one shot (16-15)

FRIENDLY MATCHES

Welwyn & District played a combined Gents and Ladies’ match at Ware, with mixed fortunes.
The Men lost by 72 shots to 77, despite winning on three of the four rinks. Welwyn’s top rink was Malcolm Baldwin., Brian Burch, Reg Tanner and Ralph Pedder (23-14)

The Ladies however, came away with an overall win by 52 shots to 32, with Doris Atkins, Daphne Pedder, Nancy James and Jane Harding scoring 32 to Ware’s 11
The Ladies were on good form again in a two rink match against North Mymms with an overall win by 44 – 34, this time Betty Singleton, Vera Joyce, Sue Wingham and Ivy Sykes leading the way.

In a league match against North Mymms, the men went down by 73 shots to 99, with only Reg Jackson, Graham Hart, Brian Lane and John Templeton on a winning rink (32 – 9) and so gaining just 15 points to their opponents’ 65.

NATIONAL OVER 55's PAIRS

In the third round of the National over 55s Pairs competition, Edgar Vaughan and Brian Smith were successful against Don Sherriff and Peter Adams (Royston) with a win by 24 shots to 11.

FRIENDLY MATCHES

In a mid-week match at Borehamwood, a mixed triples match saw Welwyn & District come away with a 106 to 79 shots victory, with the top triple Philip Manning, Michael Hanson & Margaret Templeton winners by 24 shots to 11.

The Bank Holiday weekend turned out to be successful in both matches.

On Saturday, Welwyn were comfortable winners against Rosedale, the Men winning by 88 shots to 60, while the Ladies edged a 39 to 37 victory in a two-rink match.

Top rinks were Men: Peter Wingham, John Atkins, Ken Perry & John Templeton 21- 11 and the Ladies: Jean Barclay, Mary Wills, Jillian Jennings & Lucy Ratcliffe 19 – 16.

On Sunday at Stevenage, The Welwyn Men won by 89 shots to 72. Top rink award was won easily by Arthur Humphreys, Graham Hart & Frank Joyce overwhelming their opponents by 23 shots to 5.

FRIENDLY MATCHES

In a mid-week match against Potters Bar, the Welwyn Ladies won on all three rinks, for a total victory 64 shots to 40, the top triple of Averil Balnaves, Lucy Ratcliffe and Pat O’Kane leading the way.

Away at North Mymms, the Welwyn Men won overall by 70 shots to 62. The top triple of Rod Liming, Andrew Barclay and Frank Crampton (making his debut as “Skip”) were victors by 26 shots to 12. On another rink, led by Maurice Downing, the thirteenth end proved unlucky for their hosts as Welwyn took 8 out of 9 possible shots to put themselves into an unassailable position.

In a mixed match against Datchworth, Welwyn went down by 86 shots to 101 overall, although Captain for the day Ron Bayley, with Sylvia Lane and Arthur Humphries won by 18 shots to 17, only matched for Welwyn by Janet Tickner, Robert Ducat-Brown and Margaret Templeton vying for top triple with a 20 – 19 win.. Sadly the other three triples could not help the two winners.

FRIENDLY MATCHES

After three cancellations owing to the weather the Welwyn & District opened their season with a fine win in a St Albans League match against local rivals Welwyn Garden City BC.

The Men won on all four rinks for an overall 93 shots to 60 for a maximum 80 points. The top rink was that of Don Ellis, John Lee, Bob Wells and Ron Carr, winners by 27 to 14.

The Ladies also ran out winners by 42 shots to 34, the winning rink of Betty Singleton. Pauline Richardson, Doris Atkins and Sue Kershaw overcoming their opponents by 25 shots to 11.

In a mid week match against Ware, Welwyn won by 60 to 37, with Top rink of Doris Atkins, Mary Wills, David Wesley & Ron Carr leading the way.
